PNB Hopes to look increase In Unit Holders Following Nods From Selangor, Penang Muftis

Pic: UtusanKUALA LUMPUR: Permodalan Nasional Bhd PNB hopes to enhance the number of unit holders from the current 13 million following the backing of the Selangor and Penang muftis who’ve issued a ‘harus’, or permissible repute, for Investments in the fund’s products – Amanah Saham Bumiputera and Amanah Saham Nasional.

PNB group Chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, observed there were a few cases where unit holders had requested to withdraw their investments, as their states had not issued the fatwas.

Abdul Wahid observed PNB had received demand for shariah-compliant unit have confidence funds, and in 2008, it had got approvals from the muftis from 10 states by the use of a countrywide-stage fatwa declaring that investments in Amanah Saham Nasional  Bhd had been permissible.

He spoke of PNB’s engagement with the Selangor Mufti branch had resulted within the issuance of the fatwa helping investments within the trust fund in April this year, followed by way of the Penang Mufti department’s nod in August.

He gave an assurance to traders that PNB would no longer put money into playing, alcohol and tobacco shares.

The one-day conference, themed ‘towards Sustainability of Shariah Governance and Assurance in Islamic associations’, was collectively organised by  using PNB and USIM.

It aims to promote discussions and collaborations among scholars and practitioners within the field of Islamic banking and finance.
